In 1912, an American doctor by the name of Sydney L. Russell developed the concept for the very first electric blanket. By the 1920’s the Thermega electric under blanket had become popular in Britain and eventually the USA. Adaptations and refinements of these two basic designs now comprise all commercially available electric blankets on the market today. Traditionally an electric blanket is defined as any electric blanket that goes above the top-sheet but under the comforter to keep the sleeper warm at night. An electric under blanket follows the same principle but is placed under the fitted-sheet to warm from the bottom up. Although the first blankets of this sort were made with electric wire running through authentic fleece, nowadays synthetic fleeces are used which are both safer and easier to produce.

Heated bedding has been a popular but sometimes dangerous practice which has existed long before humans figured out how to harness electricity. Even in the American West of legend, it was not uncommon for cowboys to lay a bed of coals on the ground which they then covered with a thick fire-resistant blanket. It served to keep them warm on cold wet nights but it could also get too hot to handle and burned many a careless cowboy. Similar problems have plagued more modern electric blankets.

The first heated fleece blankets were very crude compared to modern standards. Not only was the technology just being developed, but existing knowledge of electricity and fabrics that were resistant to fire were also in their infancy. It was not uncommon for fires to start or at the very least for burns to occur from faulty areas in the blanket. Nowadays, electric blankets are really quite safe and there is no need to fear using one. Still, some considerations should be taken into account which will help protect you from the minute dangers they still pose.

The first and very most important thing you can do to keep yourself safe is to never use an electric blanket more than ten years old. The reasons for this are twofold. First, heated blankets made more than ten years ago lack some new innovative features which keep more modern blankets safe. Secondly, the average, safe, lifespan of an electric blanket is about ten years. Regardless of how advanced any electric blanket is, it should never be used for more than ten years. The second thing to remember is to never use a second hand electric blanket. It is also important to periodically inspect your electric blanket for signs of damage or wear. Things to look for include any sort of fraying, burn marks, bent or broken cords, also check the power cord to see if it has any damage. These are all signs that the blanket needs to be replaced and should no longer be used. One last important thing to remember is that an electric blanket should never be folded as it can damage the cords inside. It should be loosely rolled up instead to ensure many more years of life and usefulness.

We hope you have enjoyed this brief introduction to electric blankets. They are a safe and comforting piece of bed clothing that has rightfully remained popular over nearly a century.
