Electric Blanket FAQs

How can I ensure that my electric blanket is safe and doesn’t present a fire hazard?

The easiest thing you can do is follow the instructions that come with the blanket. These will tell you not to use an underblanket as an overblanket, or vice versa. Avoid leaving the blanket on all night unless it comes with thermostatic controls which allow all-night use. Blankets more than ten years old are also a higher risk than today’s blankets.
Remember, blankets are designed to be safe. The only time they become hazardous is if they become badly frayed or damaged. If you take good care of them, you should be fine. Don’t allow your blanket to get wet, and place them in your bed in such a way that they won’t slip or crease while you sleep.

Who can I ask to test my blanket to see if it’s safe, and how often should I do so?

It’s probably a good idea to make sure your blanket is safe every three years. The best way to find testing options near you is to return to the shop where you purchased the blanket and ask.

Can I machine dry my blanket?

It depends on what material it is made of. Generally speaking, blankets made of fleece can be machine washed, whereas thick blankets made of wool need to be taken to the dry cleaner. Usually there will be cleaning instructions included with any blanket you buy new. If it is a homemade blanket, you will simply need to ask the person who made it. Blankets don’t usually need to be washed all that often, and when in doubt, it might not be a bad idea to just take it to the dry cleaner.
