Electric Blankets FAQs

Q: What are the different types of electric blankets available?

A: There are 3 basic types of electric blankets on the market today. First, there is a duvet-like electric blanket for the top of your bed that can be left turned on all night. Next is an under-blanket that is used to pre-heat the bed, but must always be shut off before you get in. Lastly is the extra-safe under-blanket. If you want to leave your heated blanket on all night, then this is the one you'll need.

Q: How much does it cost to run an electric blanket?

A: An electric blanket might consume 200 watts (depending on the setting). So if you leave it on for 10 hours, it consumes 2 kilowatt-hours. That would cost between 15 and 30 cents, depending on your location.

Q: When were electric blankets invented?

A: They were invented in the early 1900s, were big, bulky heating devices and were considered an oddity.
